Nestled in the western part of Quảng Bình province, Viet Nam, Tuyên Hóa district is renowned for its expansive forested landscapes, which are integral to the region’s ecological balance and cultural identity. These forests, characterized by lush greenery and diverse ecosystems, play a pivotal role in preserving biodiversity and supporting the livelihoods of local communities.

1. Geographical Overview

Tuyên Hóa district is situated along the Trường Sơn mountain range, encompassing majestic mountains and dense forests that serve as the source of the legendary Gianh River. The district shares its borders with:

  • North: Hương Khê, Cẩm Xuyên, and Kỳ Anh districts of Hà Tĩnh province.

  • West: Minh Hóa district and Laos.

  • South: Bố Trạch district.

  • East: Quảng Trạch district of Quảng Bình province.

This strategic location contributes to Tuyên Hóa’s rich natural resources and its significance in regional biodiversity conservation.

2. Biodiversity Significance

The forests of Tuyên Hóa are home to a multitude of plant and animal species, many of which are endemic or threatened. Notable aspects include:

  • Flora: The region boasts a variety of plant species, including valuable timber trees like ebony and legumes, which are essential for both ecological balance and local economies.

  • Fauna: Tuyên Hóa’s forests provide habitat for several rare species:

    • Hà Tĩnh Langur (Trachypithecus hatinhensis): First spotted in 2012, this endangered primate has a small population in the karst areas of Thạch Hóa, Đồng Hóa, Thuận Hóa, and Sơn Hóa communes. Conservation efforts are ongoing to protect and increase their numbers.

Bird Species: The area supports various bird species, contributing to its rich avian diversity.

Hatinh langur (Trachypithecus hatinhensis) – a rare and endangered primate endemic to Vietnam and Laos.

    3. Conservation Initiatives

Recognizing the ecological importance of Tuyên Hóa’s forests, several conservation projects have been implemented:

    • Special-Use Forest (SUF) Establishment: Over 500 hectares have been designated as SUF to protect critical habitats and biodiversity, underscoring the area’s conservation value.
    • Community Conservation Teams: Local communities, in collaboration with organizations like WildAct Viet Nam, have formed voluntary conservation teams. These groups actively engage in patrolling and protecting forest resources, demonstrating the effectiveness of community-led conservation models.
    • Agroforestry and Livelihood Improvement: Projects aimed at co-managing biodiversity while enhancing local livelihoods have been introduced. By integrating agroforestry practices, these initiatives seek to reduce pressure on forest resources and promote sustainable land use.
    • Afforestation for Hatinh langurs: HiVOOC partnered with us to plant trees in the Hatinh langur conservation buffer zone. This effort promotes responsible tourism and provides food for wildlife. We encourage every visitor to plant a tree.
    • Canopy bridges for Hatinh langurs: HiVOOC also supports the local community to build canopy bridges to facilitate movements of langurs in fragmented areas and mitigate wildlife-human conflicts.
Tourists join hands to plant trees in the buffer zone of the Hatinh Langur’s forest protection area.

    4. Challenges and Future Directions

Despite ongoing conservation efforts, Tuyên Hóa’s forests face challenges such as habitat conversion, resource over-exploitation, and deforestation.

    Future strategies should focus on:

    • Strengthening Community Engagement: Empowering local communities through education and participation in conservation activities to foster a sense of ownership and responsibility.

    • Promoting Sustainable Livelihoods: Developing alternative income sources that align with conservation goals, such as ecotourism and sustainable agriculture.

    • Enhancing Legal Frameworks: Implementing and enforcing policies that protect forested areas from illegal activities and ensure sustainable resource use.

Tuyên Hóa’s forests are invaluable assets that embody the rich biodiversity and cultural heritage of Quảng Bình province. Through concerted conservation efforts, community involvement, and sustainable development practices, these forests can continue to thrive, offering ecological, economic, and cultural benefits for generations to come.
