10 kilometers away northeast from the bustling Da Nang City, Son Tra Peninsula is blessed with breathtaking natural landscapes and iconic checkpoints, making it  a fascinating location for every globetrotter who makes their way to Viet Nam.

THE BIODIVERSITY OF SON TRA

Son Tra expands an area of approximately 60 square kilometers with an altitude averaging 350 m above sea level. Since this peninsula is covered with evergreen forest and is relatively isolated from the hectic lifestyle of human society, it possesses an incredibly remarkable biodiversity with over 1,000 plant species and 370 recorded animal species that collectively call Son Tra home. Some animals and plants include Rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta), red muntjac (Muntiacus muntjak), tailorbirds, butterfly needles (Bidens alba), climbing wattle (Acacia pennata (L.) Willd), and so on.

One of the renowned heartthrobs of such a place is the exceptionally rare, endangered red-shanked douc langur (Pygathrix nemaeus) which is also called “The Queen of Primates”. This vibrantly magnificent primate is mostly discovered inhabiting Son Tra with an estimated population of 2000 individuals and is the key factor that entices tourists, notably nature lovers, in visiting this peninsula.

MUST-VISIT PLACES IN SON TRA PENINSULA

Besides being a biodiversity hotspot, Son Tra Peninsula also possesses checkpoints that are of essence to nature and historic, religious significance. Here are some extraordinary must-go places in Son Tra that you must add to your bucket list if intending to get to Da Nang.

1. Linh Ung Pagoda & Lady Buddha Statue

Linh Ung Pagoda was built in 2004 and has become an attraction to Buddhists and travelers for its stunning artistic architectural work. Visitors will also have a chance to witness Vietnam’s tallest Lady Buddha Statue with a towering height of 67 meters standing on a hugely large lotus platform. The position of the pagoda in harmonious combination with the natural landscape offers a great moment of tranquility as well as an ethereal atmosphere. From here, visitors can observe panoramic views of the coastal city of Da Nang. The opening hours are 6 a.m to 9 p.m with no charges.

2. Ban Co Peak (“Chessboard Peak”)

Ban Co Peak is situated on the highest peak of Son Tra ( approximately 693m), hence, it is also known as “Da Nang’s rooftop” where it features a legendary statue of a chess-playing deity named De Thich.

Legend has it that a fairy once descended to Son Tra Peninsula created a chessboard made of rock. The other fairy – De Thich – came across and asked for a chess match. The intense match remained tied until De Thich was distracted by the gorgeous goddesses, resulting in his loss. Even though the other fairy left, De Thich still sat there with a view of resolving the chess game. When you pay a visit to Ban Co Peak, what comes to your mind firsthand is a huge chessboard with a sitting rocky statue of De Thich trying to debunk the chess game.

Standing on the Ban Co Peak ultimately offers you breathtaking 360° views of Da Nang and the coastline. Also, you will be facilitated to savour valuable moments of sunrise and sunset.

3. The Thousand-Year-Old Banyan Tree

Speaking of Son Tra as a natural wonder, one should not miss the majestic, massive banyan tree here. This banyan tree is estimated to be over 800 years old by experts and is called “Cây Đa Ngàn Năm” (The Thousand-Year-Old Banyan Tree in Vietnamese). The Son Tra’s banyan tree attains a height of 22m and a diameter of 10m. In addition, this tree possesses 26 root branches about 25m tall.

The thousand-year-old banyan tree gives a sense of mystery for those who set foot in here. Not only does the banyan tree manifest the rich ecosystem of the peninsula but also holds great historic values, especially during the Viet Nam War, which undoubtedly pleases visitors who are deeply into either nature or the history of Viet Nam.

4. Mui Nghe – The First Sunrise Spot in Da Nang

Mui Nghe or Nghe Cape is one of the most pristine and stunning coastal spots in Da Nang. The name “Mui Nghe” emanates from a large rock formation resembling a sea lion (“Nghê” in Vietnamese), gazing toward the East Sea. In Vietnamese culture, Nghê is a mythical creature symbolizing protection and good fortune.

One of Mui Nghe’s unique features is a naturally formed seawater pool nestled among rugged rock formations. This stunning natural lagoon offers crystal-clear waters, making it an ideal spot for swimming, snorkeling, and underwater exploration.

5. Son Tra Viewpoint & Radar Station (“Indochina’s Eyes”)

Located high on the Son Tra peninsula, about 621 m above sea level. About 14 km from Da Nang city, this facility is a former U.S military radar station from the 1960s to serve different purposes in relation to airspace control. After the official dependence of Vietnam, the radar station has become a scenic viewpoint for travelers as they are able to observe the panoramic view of Da Nang, East Sea, and greeny mountains.

6. Black Rock Beach (“Bãi Đá Đen”)

Coming to the Black Rock Beach, tourists can actually witness beach scenery added with large stacking black boulders, hence the name “Black Rock Beach”. This location offers a picturesque natural landscape with the contrast between the blackness of the rocks and crystal-clear waters, ensuring that visitors will be driven crazy thanks to its beauty. Some citizens even coin the name “Obama Beach” to celebrate the first black President of the United States.

7. Bai But (“Buddha Beach”)

Another destination for beach lovers is Bai But, or the “Buddha Beach”. As the name suggests, this beach is linked tightly to a legend where a wife was bereaved of her beloved husband. When she decided to end her life once and for all, the Buddha appeared and rescued the woman. In the end, she became a Buddhist nun in a temple. Today, the Buddha Beach is acknowledged as a sacred place for both Buddhists and tourists. There are a wide range of entertaining beach activities for visitors to enjoy such as sailing, jet-skiing, or snorkeling.

8. Bãi Bắc

Bãi Bắc (North Beach) is one of the most untouched and beautiful beaches on Son Tra Peninsula. It is known for its clear blue waters, soft white sand, and lush tropical surroundings. Unlike the busier beaches of Da Nang, Bãi Bắc offers a more secluded and peaceful experience—perfect for those seeking tranquility and a deep connection with nature. Whether you want to relax on a quiet beach, snorkel in clear waters, or experience world-class hospitality, Bãi Bắc has something for everyone.

9. Bãi Tiên Sa – Fairy Beach

“Bãi Tiên Sa” means “The Beach of Fairies”, inspired by a local legend. It is said that celestial fairies once descended here to bathe because of its pure beauty and tranquility. The name reflects the beach’s mythical charm and untouched nature. Bãi Tiên Sa is quieter and less crowded than other beaches in Da Nang. Its golden sand, clear blue waters, and surrounding green mountains create a secluded paradise, perfect for relaxation. With gentle waves and clean waters, Bãi Tiên Sa is ideal for swimming, kayaking, and snorkeling. The beach’s calm sea makes it safe for families and beginner swimmers.
